World Airways, SkyPilot to Deliver Free Wi-Fi Service to Occoquan
Historic Virginia Town to Receive Next Generation Internet Platform
Santa Clara, CA—August 24, 2006—SkyPilot Networks, the leading provider of carrier-class broadband wireless mesh networks, today announced that along with World Airwaves, it will build out a wireless network powered by SkyPilot equipment in Occoquan, VA a historic Prince William County town outside of Washington, D.C. The network will offer free public Wi-Fi Internet access to tourists, visitors, merchants and area residents.
"It is only a matter of time before wireless Internet access is an expectation, so I think it's particularly valuable that we are one of the first in Prince William and northern Virginia to offer it," said Earnie Porta, mayor of Occoquan. "The convenience of public wireless broadband access is yet one more reason for people to visit Occoquan. And once they experience our blend of shops, restaurants, local history, and other services, I am confident they will want to return again and again."
"Our goal is to have Wi-Fi access in the business district in time for our Fall Arts and Crafts Festival on September 23rd and 24th," said Mayor Porta. "This event includes 300 guest merchants in addition to the 125 local shops, and will draw thousands of visitors from not only Virginia, Maryland and DC but throughout the country."
The Wi-Fi network in Occoquan will utilize a next-generation IPv6 multicast architecture with advanced wireless security features. The network supports quick and easy deliver of city-wide multi-megabit connectivity for IP-based voice, video and data applications. All federal agencies and the Department of Defense are required to utilize IPv6 by 2008.
