Robust Traffic Management

SkyPilot provides network administrators with a great deal of traffic management flexibility, enabling them to custom engineer their network in a way that best serves their business needs. At the edges of the wireless network, SkyPilot provides sophisticated traffic shaping and filtering capabilities to ensure efficient utilization of precious wireless bandwidth. Once the traffic is within the wireless network, SkyPilot provides great flexibility to classify, segment, and prioritize the traffic to meet QoS metrics.

Per-Subscriber Rate Limiting
With SkyPilot, network administrators can create several tiers of subscriber services, each with their own unique upstream and downstream traffic rates. These traffic tiers allow them to offer subscriber pricing based on performance (i.e. symmetrical 1 Mbps service; symmetrical 2 Mbps; asymmetrical 2 Mbps downstream/1 Mbps upstream) to give subscribers the price/performance flexibility when choosing between services. Each subscriber is then configured with a rate-limited service tier, and the traffic rates are ensured throughout the SkyPilot network by rating limiting at the edges. For downstream traffic, the traffic rate is controlled at the SkyGateway, and for upstream traffic, the traffic rate is controlled at the subscriber's node (SkyConnector, SkyExtender, or SkyExtender DualBand). With end-to-end traffic shaping occurring at the edges of the network, the network administrator ensures maximum utilization of the total wireless capacity.

Traffic Filtering
With SkyPilot sophisticated traffic filtering capabilities, network administrators are given the option to remove certain traffic types instead of allowing the traffic to impact the network's performance. These filters are applied at the edges of the network, ensuring maximum network performance and limiting attacks from the outside. SkyPilot's traffic filtering capabilities include customized matching of IP protocol types, IP source and destination addresses, TCP/UDP source and destination ports, and other traffic fields.

Virtual LANs (VLANs)
The SkyPilot system is also capable of establishing virtual LANs for traffic segmentation and separation. With VLANs, network administrators can provide businesses with their own private network, separate VoIP traffic from data traffic, or otherwise segment their wireless broadband services to meet their business objectives. These VLANs can be used for traffic prioritization as well to ensure maximum throughput and maintain low latency.

Traffic Prioritization
Every SkyPilot device has multiple traffic queues to insure quality-of-service metrics are met for high-priority traffic. To enable traffic prioritization, SkyPilot offers network administrators with a wide variety of option to determine which traffic should be consider high-priority and thus receive preferential treatment. SkyPilot's sophisticated matching functionality provides great flexibility to map traffic to high-priority traffic queues. This functionality includes customized, configuration matching of the following fields:

  • IP Type Of Service (TOS) field*
  • IP protocol type (i.e. ping, FTP, etc.)
  • IEEE 801.1q VLAN ID
  • IEEE 801.1p user priority
  • IP source address*
  • IP destination address*
  • TCP/UDP source port
  • TCP/UDP destination port
  • Source MAC address*
  • Destination MAC address*
  • Protocol type (i.e. IPv4, ARP, AppleTalk, etc.)

* masks enable the ability to meet criteria based on variable field matching
